Embroidery

An endless fascination with the small details of the natural world, especially to be found in plants and insects, provides the inspiration for my work.

Although originally trained in Environmental Sciences followed by a long career in education, it was my love of embroidery which was inspired from an early age by my mother and grandmother which led to a change in direction. It was only after moving to the Welsh Marches with my family that I was able to pursue my passion in needlecraft and textiles and join the Hay Makers.

My work is ever-evolving as I research and discover new techniques and inspirations. However, it is an appreciation for the beauty and history of the material that I search out - this being mainly traditionally-made antique linen which informs much of my work. I am guided by these materials as a backdrop to the needlework techniques, including machine and hand embroidery, stump work and appliqué, which I love to use. I hope my embroidered wall hangings engage the senses by combining the visual with the textural element of the materials and embroidery, with the calming scent of camomile and lavender.

I find inspiration from a variety of sources, including museums and art galleries, to observing the natural world around me. I am particularly intrigued by the awesome nature of bees and other insects that I encourage throughout our garden. I try to capture the detail, colour and form of nature in my work.
